Saturday’s Division-I Baseball Recap (3/2) Presented by The Schwarz Institute

Another Saturday of baseball on the island resulted in an even amount of struggles and success for the local teams. Stony Brook, Fordham and Hofstra were the only teams to play on Saturday, combining for two wins and three losses. The weather was an issue this weekend, so let’s hope things change next week. Here are the results from Saturday.

Division-I:

After dropping two closely contested games on Friday, Stony Brook let Saturday’s game slip away from them, as they lost Game 3 to No.13 ranked Arkansas 15-7. As a result, they were swept. From the beginning of this game, it was clear the Arkansas offense was clicking on all cylinders. After holding the No. 13 team in the nation to just seven runs in the first two games of the series, it was just a matter of time until their bats exploded. Between six pitchers, the Stony Brook pitching staff combined to allow 14 earned runs on 15 hits and allowed six walks. At the plate for the Seawolves, Dylan Resk continued to stay hot as he went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Stony Brook will look to rebound on Tuesday against Manhattan (weather pending).

Fordham was able to walk out of Saturday’s double header with a win, as they dropped Game 1 but won Game 2 against Maryland Eastern Shore. In the first one, the Rams fell 6-4 in seven innings. After a four-spot from Maryland Eastern Shore in the 2nd inning, they took control for the rest of the game. Fordham simply couldn’t string together enough hits at the right time.

The second game of the DH however, was a different story. Game 3 of the series resulted in a victory as Fordham defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 4-1 in seven innings. Their pitching got the job done and their offense came through when needed the most. On the mound, Joseph Quintal was the winning pitcher, as he went six innings allowing seven hits, one earned run and struck out nine. Kyle Martin shut the door in the 7th for his second save of the young season. At the plate, Fordham combined for seven hits. Colton Snelling led the offense going 2-for-3. Standing at 4-6 on the season, Fordham will look to win three out of four games against Maryland Eastern Shore as they play game four of the series today at noon.

If you were the scorekeeper for Hofstra on Saturday, this day was a nightmare. In game one of their double header, Hofstra got destroyed by Central Michigan by a score of 24-7. Evidently, their pitching staff would like to forget this one, along with their defense who combined for three errors. In total, five Hofstra pitchers combined to allow 16 earned runs on 17 hits and 12 walks. At the plate however, Hofstra saw four different players collect
multi-hit games. A positive sign would turn things around quickly for them.

Game two of Hofstra’s double header resulted in a win, as they defeated St. Peter’s 14-9. Although their pitching and defense struggled in the late innings, this was overcome by their hot bats. After six innings, the Pride held an extremely comfortable 13-1 lead. The rest is history. Freshman Anthony D’Onofrio was the catalyst of their offense, going 4-5 with a double and two RBI. Vito Friscia was an on base machine in this one, going 1-2 with 3 walks and 2 RBI. Parker Quinn and Rob Weissheier both had 2 RBI as well. Ryan Rue picked up the win for Hofstra, going six innings allowing two earned runs on six hits and five strikeouts. Mike Murray pitched two shut out innings in relief. Hofstra will play Butler at 1 PM today in Florida.
