There was not a cloud in the sky for much of Saturday afternoon. I spent the day at LIU, but there was quality baseball all over Long Island.
Here’s how it went down:

Division-I:
Stony Brook continued their incredible run as they swept a DH from Hartford to run their streak to eight games. In Game 1, they fell behind early, 2-0, on a two-run HR by Tremayne Cobb Jr against Brian Herrmann. The lead did not last long, though. Chris Hamilton crushed a game-tying two-run HR to right field in the third inning. Brett Paulsen gave the Seawolves a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning and they never looked back. They added insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Cole Durkan and a sac fly by Johnny Decker. Herrmann wound up going the complete 7 innings, allowing just the two earned runs with eight strikeouts. Chris Hamilton led the offense with three hits while Brett Paulsen added two.
Game 2 featured more theatrics, as the Seawolves won on a walk-off in the 10th. They trailed 5-3 heading into the eighth, but inched closer on an RBI single by Johnny Tuccillo to score Evan Giordano. In the ninth with their backs against the wall, Brett Paulsen ripped an RBI single to score John LaRocca to tie the game. In the 10th inning, Evan Fox hit a one-out triple, after an intentional walk to John LaRocca, Brett Paulsen executed a perfect bunt and they were unable to make the throw so it would go down as a walk-off single as the Seawolves pulled off the comeback. They have won eight games in a row and are 8-0 in conference play. They will travel to face UMASS-Lowell next weekend as they potentially look to push their streak to double digits.

Hofstra swept Rhode Island by the scores of 3-1 and 5-4. In Game 1, Jimmy Joyce got the start and he performed well. He pitched six innings, allowed 1 run on five hits and struck out six. After allowing an RBI ground out in the first inning, he was lights-out after that. Hofstra tied it up in the sixth on an RBI single by Steven Harrington to score Ryan Morash. In the bottom of the eighth (extra innings), Brian Goulard crushed his first HR of the season – walk-off two-run shot to deliver the 3-1 win for the Pride. Andrew Mundy recorded the win, making his season debut. The sixth year season struck out two and worked around a walk.
In Game 2, Hofstra took an early 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Anthony D’Onofrio and Rob Weissheier. They would extend the lead to 3-0 in the second on an RBI single by Aidan Larkin. URI would get one back in the fourth and the fifth innings of RHP Brad Camarda. URI tied it up in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Addison Kopack. Steven Harrington’s two-run home run (first career) to give the Pride a 5-3 lead. Two hit batters and two walks would allow URI to get one run back, but Chris Mott was able to strike out the final batter to slam the door on the DH sweep. The Pride improved to 9-6 on the season, they will be back in action next weekend against Northeastern.

Fordham defeated Seton Hall, 1-0, in a well-played ballgame. Ace LHP Matt Mikulski fired a gem, a 12-K, 2-hit shutout with no walks. In the process, he recorded his 200th career strikeout, which puts him in rarified air of the storied history of Fordham baseball. He’s the 9th hurler to eclipse the mark. The lone run came on an RBI double by Zach Selinger to score Alvin Melendez. David Festa was outstanding for Seton Hall as well. The teams will be back in action on Wednesday at Fordham. The Rams improved to 12-6 on the season.
LIU defeated FDU, 9-2. We covered the game and the recap can be found here.
Division-II
Molloy swept Queens by the scores of 15-4 and 9-1. Game 1 was over quickly as the high-powered Lions offense got out to a 10-0 lead in the third inning after a two-run triple by Matt Overton essentially put it out of reach. Timmy Panetta started and was effective. He went seven innings, allowing four ER and striking out nine for his fourth win of the young season. Ryan Hynes and Billy Wildeman contributed scoreless innings of relief. Molloy knocked 12 hits but they also drew 13 walks and left 11 runners on base so it could’ve been even more lopsided. Overton had two hits and three RBI. Pete Theodorellis, Sean Hogan and Jacob McCarthy each had two hits.
In Game 2, Charlie Cucchiara was outstanding and won his first game of the year. The East Meadow RHP went 7 innings, struck out nine, walked none and yielded just three hits. He has been lights-out this year so don’t be surprised if he factors into the rotation the rest of the season. David Franchi went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Sean Hogan had two hits and two RBI. Patrick Hoffman also had an RBI single. These teams will square off on Monday again at 3pm.
Adelphi was swept by New Haven by the scores of 14-2 and 5-3. Not many takeaways from Game 1. They got out to a quick 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Jack Ryan to score Matt Alifano, but that was short lived. Nic Luc started and allowed 8 runs (4 ER) over 2.2 IP. Steven Murphy, Jacob Dannenberg, Rob Affenita III and Nicholas Maricich pitched in relief. Ryan was the lone bright spot for the Panthers, as he compiled three of the team’s six hits.
In Game 2, Jack Ryan struck again with a game-tying two-run double in the third to make it 2-2, but Long Island-native Andrew Bianco (Kings Park 2019) crushed a three-run shot to open up a 5-2 lead. Andrew Cain (Seaford 2017) earned the win and Brandon LaManna (Smithtown West 2016) earned the save.
Division-III
USMMA swept SUNY Purchase by the scores of 9-4 and 6-4 to improve to 7-0 on the season. In Game 1, captain and RHP Ben Kane got the start and was extremely effective, going six innings, allowing just 1 ER, allowing four hits, two walks and striking out five. The Mariners got on the board in the first inning on an RBI ground out by Garrett Aichele. Purchase tied the game up in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Matt Nilsen. In the home half of the fourth, Zac Skov hit an RBI single to score Aichele to give USMMA a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Tyler Reistetter scored Skov on an RBI single of his own to make it 3-1. Purchase inched closer when Dylan Flynn reached on an E3 to score Matt Mulligan. That was as close as they would get. Andrew Hunt, the former Reliever of the Year for the Skyline Conference, fired another three shutout innings to record his fourth save of the season – all four are 9-out saves. He has yet to allow a run this season. Garrett Aichele led the offense with three hits and four RBI. Skov added three hits and three RBI.
In Game 2, Purchase led 2-0 In the fourth inning of the 7-inning game. Timmy Chase scored Zac Skov on an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1. Purchase added a run in the fifth on a steal of home by Tighe Jorgensen to make it 3-1. In the home half of the inning, Brayden O’Connell reached on an error by the pitcher that allowed Jacob Kelly and Davis Holly to score and tie the game at 3-3. Kellen Brown scored O’Connell with an RBI single to give USMMA the 4-3 lead.Jack McCann’s RBI triple gave them a much-needed insurance run. Billy Todd earned the win, going 2.2 innings, allowing 1 ER and striking out two.
USMMA is now 7-0 on the season, they will host SJC-Long Island on Saturday for a double header and travel to Patchogue to face them for a double header on Sunday.
