Massapequa Cyclones in Full Control, Cruise to 12-2 Victory for 11u Grand Slam Spring Champions

by Chris Prystupa

Championship Sunday continued at Plainedge Park as the Massapequa Cyclones became the ECYB 11U Spring League Grand Slam Champions with their victory over the New York Valor this afternoon.

The Massapequa Cyclones offense got it started right off the bat in the first inning with a barrage of hits in their turn to bat. Land and Henchy doubled, and Weiss and Steck singled paired nicely with two walks to help the Cyclones jump out to an early 5-0 lead.

The Valor would go quietly in their turn up at bat in the next inning. The Cyclones continued to fire on all cylinders offensively as Weiss, Henchy, and Land continued their big days with more hits including a double, some walks, and a few singles extending their lead over the Valor to 9-0 in the second inning.

The third inning went relatively quiet for both teams as the Cyclones maintained their shutout over the Valor. They only tacked on another run as Kaplan singled home Steck after he doubled making it 10-0.

With their backs against the wall with the impending mercy rule, the Valor were able to score two runs on a Martone single scoring Ruttino and Terrana on the play making it a 10-2 game. The Cyclones responded with two more runs in their following turn to bat on a two RBI double by Hunt to score Weiss and Henchy. With the Cyclones being up ten runs the umpires signaled the mercy rule and the Cyclones captured their league championship.

The Cyclones were dominant through out this spring season.

Here’s the scores from their season:

7-2 win over NY Valor

14-0 win over Whitestone Pirates

12-1 win over Port Washington Legends

10-0 win over Whites Pirates

12-2 win over NY Valor

The Massapequa varsity baseball team also captured the 2022 Long Island Championship, so it was a great weekend to be a baseball player from Massapequa. If this is any indication, the future of Massapequa baseball is in great hands.
