LI Elite Sweeps Sunday DH at Mitchel Field

The LIB Voodoo faced off with the LI Elite Vallas in a double header between two impressive 16U teams in LI Boys of Summer action.

The Voodoo started the game off with an RBI triple off the bat of their right fielder to take an early 1-0 lead. They quickly followed it up with another RBI single by their starting pitcher Tyler Anderson to make it a 2-run lead, another runner would be walked in and before he even stepped foot on the mound it was a 3-0 game. Anderson would go on to work around a walk and throw a scoreless first.

In the second, Elite starting pitcher, Marino would throw a scoreless frame. Anderson would match Marino and the score would stay the same until the bottom of the third, Anderson would get the first two outs and looked to work around a walk and a couple stolen bases, he thought he was out of the inning after garnering a flyball to left but an unfortunate error would allow the Elite to score their first run. The game would head to the fourth with a 3-1 score.

In the top of the fourth the Elite would bring in a new pitcher #3, Sullivan, he would fire a scoreless fourth frame as would Anderson.

In the top of the fifth the Voodoo would tack on three more on the back of a two run single and a steal of home on a wild pitch making it a 6-1 game. Anderson would fire another scoreless inning and would argue to stay in the game but after 92 pitches his day would be over.

Both teams would fire scoreless 6th innings including a good inning from Kosior who hit the first inning triple.

In the top of the 7th the Elite would put in a new pitcher #33, Abbitello and he would fire a scoreless inning.

In the bottom of the 7th things would get crazy, the inning would start at the back of the order and all three batters would reach – via two walks and a single. A walk would drive in a run making it 6-2. Immediately after, 3-hitter Kieran Kehoe would hit a two-run double to make it 6-4. Another run would be walked in, and a fielder’s choice would tie the game with a man on third and two out. LIB would get a ground ball but a throwing error at short would allow Elite to complete the comeback and a walk off win in a thrilling game.

And if that was not enough for you then it is a good thing there was another game to play.

Game two would feature some more impressive hitting and some much improved fielding featuring some great outfield play. In this game the Elite would be the away team and would be held to a scoreless inning by Voodoo starting pitcher Martinez who was throwing hard with great location. The Elite would send out a hard throwing lefty, #10, Justin Kollmeier who would give up a run on an RBI triple.

Martinez would fire a scoreless second, an RBI double would drive in the second run of the game. The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the 5th inning as both pitchers would settle down and do a good job pitching to contact and throwing strikes.

In the top of the 5th the elite would come to bat down 2-0 in what would wind up being the final inning due to time constraints.

Martinez would start the inning on the mound but the Elite would string together a bunch of singles to score their first run. Then with the bases loaded when a two run single by #10 Zirogiannis would give his guys the lead. Then a triple from Kieran Kehoe would give them insurance and a 5-2 lead. At this point, they would change pitchers and after a walk and an error the Elite would lead 8-2 after a great throw from the right fielder to get a runner at home and end the inning. With last licks, the Voodoo would string together a couple base hits but could not complete the comeback and would lose the game 8-3, but they showed some resilience.

All in all it was a great day of baseball from two teams that play well above their years and look towards a great rest of the summer.
