Up Next Powered by Ken Kortright State Farm Agency: Quincy Gibbs

(Editor’s Note: This is the third installment of the 2025 Up Next Series in which we highlight the top underclassmen on Long Island. Previously, we highlighted Jack Mulligan and Alex Pagano. Special thanks to Ken Kortright State Farm Agency for sponsoring this year’s series.)

Baseball is in Quincy Gibbs’ blood.

His father, also named Quincy, played at Hofstra University and played two seasons for the Long Island Ducks. His brother, Isaiah, currently plays college ball.

While playing for Smithtown Christian last year as a freshman, Quincy helped lead the Knights to winning the Suffolk Class D Championship and New York State Class D Regional. He pitched in the County Championship and in the NYS Semifinal loss to North Warren.

He continued to excel in the summer on both sides of the ball. He went 33-for-71 (.465) with 5 doubles, 1 triples, 21 RBIs, 9 walks, 2 HBP and 14 stolen bases. On the mound, he used his high-powered fastball to strike out 53 batters over 27 innings while yielding just 12 hits. He allowed 10 ER. He served as their fireman, coming into difficult high-leverage spots on a frequent basis. He was named to 5 All-Tournament teams.

His summer coach, Chuck Lodato, had the following to say:

“First and foremost, Quincy carries himself with class and is so respectful to others around him. Sometimes I shake my head and I can’t believe he is so young in age, but much older in maturity! A well mannered young man. As for a player Quincy is unselfish, and is willing to do whatever it takes to help his team win. His baseball IQ is at a high level and is always talking with his teammates and coaches about the situational stuff. He excels at multiple positions.”

Now at The Stony Brook School, Gibbs and his heater will look to help the Bears continue

I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…

Why did you choose to attend The Stony Brook School?

My brother attended the school to play baseball and I always knew I would make my way there one day.

Who are some people who have had a positive impact on your career?

My brother is always the one who pushed me to be better than him. The other people that have had a positive impact on me are my parents, who stay on top of me about practicing, getting good grades and being a respectful person.

Favorite professional athletes?

Trea Turner. He can hit for power and contact, plays a stellar shortstop and has a strong arm. His impact on the bases is also something I want to mimic in my game.

Was baseball always your No. 1 sport?

Yes, from a very young age.

Any family members that played pro or college sports?

My dad played for the LI Ducks and went to Hofstra. My brother is a freshman and plays in college now.

Goals for this offseason?

  • Get bigger, faster and stronger
  • Gain 1 or 2 MPH on my fastball…so hopefully 92 or 93 by spring.
  • Establish a splitter
  • Starting driving the ball to all parts of the field.
  • Less swings and misses
  • Get a better first step on the bat while playing the infield

Goals for next season?

Batting average above .350, steal 20+ bases, hit 3 HRs.

Do you work with any private instructors?

No, since my dad played at a high level he has trained me since I started throwing a baseball. We are in the gym every morning and usually hit, depending on the day, before I go to school.

What was the biggest thrill you’ve ever had on a baseball field?

Hitting a walk-off homer back when I was in 12u.

Best baseball trip you’ve been on?

In 14u, we went to South Carolina for a tournament with my LIB team. I batted over .500, played at a beautiful ballpark, won a ton of games and went to the beach where the water was super warm – unlike the beaches on Long Island.
